Specialist roles filled in a town where the skills did not live.
A specialized materials manufacturer, Orillia, Ontario
Metallurgy, engineering, capital projects, safety, IT, HR and finance, recruited for a plant ninety minutes from the nearest big labour market, with relocation built into the search.

- Wider mapcandidates relocated to Orillia
A specialized manufacturing operation in Orillia needed people the local market does not produce: plant and R&D metallurgists, a manufacturing engineer, a capital projects manager, an engineering and facilities manager, plus the safety, IT, HR and finance roles that keep a technical plant compliant and running.
Each search started from a thin local pool. The candidates with the right technical skills and industry experience lived in the GTA, in Hamilton, in Sudbury, in other provinces. Posting locally and waiting was not going to fill niche seats.
We widened the map before we lowered the bar. Each role was sourced across Ontario first, then nationally, with role-specific screening for the processes, standards and plant conditions this operation runs.
Relocation became part of the search rather than an afterthought. Candidates who were open to moving were told early what Orillia offers, what the commute and the cost of living look like against the city, and what the move would involve, so the people who reached interview had already decided the town was possible.
For the strongest candidates we helped structure the offer around the move, so relocation support was a line in the agreement rather than a negotiation at the end.
The parts of the method that did the work.
- 01
Geography first, bar second
A niche skill set has a small population. Searching wider, province then country, kept the standard where the plant needed it.
- 02
Selling the town as hard as the job
Housing cost, the lake, schools, the commute: a candidate who has not pictured living there will not relocate for a title.
- 03
Relocation as a term of the offer
Support for the move, written into the offer, took the last objection off the table for the candidates the plant wanted most.
- 04
Interviews that include the drive
Finalists came to the plant and saw the town. A second visit with a partner closed more than one search.
Specialist and professional positions filled across engineering, metallurgy, capital projects, health and safety, IT, human resources and finance.
By broadening the search area and supporting relocation, the plant gained access to skills the local market could not supply, and stopped losing months to searches that started with nobody to call.

If you are hiring for roles like these.
- If the skill is rare, the search is nationalBudget the time and the relocation cost up front. It is cheaper than a seat that stays open for a year.
- Put relocation in the offer, not in the conversationA written relocation term converts candidates who would otherwise stay put.
- Let the town make its own caseBring finalists on site. Pictures and a tour move people that a salary bump does not.
- Hire the enabling roles tooSafety, IT, HR and finance made the technical hires stick. A plant is a system.
