What happened
Chobani Australia has widened the remit of its people and culture function to include communications, as reported by HRD Canada. The company's people and culture lead explains the thinking behind the move.
The report points to two themes that now sit at the heart of the HR role there: communicating change to employees, and setting guardrails for how AI is used at work.
The full detail is not available to us. The report does not say how the team is structured, how many people were added, or what specific AI rules Chobani has put in place. What it does make clear is the direction: HR is being asked to own how the organization talks to its people, not only how it hires, pays and develops them.
Why it matters if you are hiring
This is a food manufacturer, and the signal reaches well past one company. When change is constant, new systems, new tools, new ways of working, the quality of the message decides whether people adopt it or resist it. Putting communications next to HR is one way to get that right.
For employers in Canada, it changes what you look for in people and culture hires. A generalist who can run payroll and policy is no longer the whole brief. Consider candidates who can write plainly, plan a rollout, brief supervisors and handle questions from a shop floor as well as an office.
It also raises a question on AI. Someone has to decide what staff may and may not do with these tools, and then explain it in terms people follow. That work usually lands on HR by default. If it lands on yours, name the owner and write it into the job description rather than letting it drift.
Plant and operations leaders feel this directly. Supervisors carry most change messages to the line. HR leaders who can equip them are worth more than those who only issue memos.
One thing to do this week
List the three biggest changes coming to your workforce in the next six months, then write down who is responsible for explaining each one to staff. If any answer is "nobody" or "whoever has time", that gap is your next hiring or role-design decision.
Traverse helps employers find people and culture, HR and operations professionals who can pair sound people practice with clear communication, across Ontario and the rest of Canada.
