Steel layoffs at Stelco may reverse if tariff policy shifts

What happened

Cleveland-Cliffs CEO Lourenco Goncalves has pointed at Canada as the reason for layoffs at Stelco, as reported by Manufacturing Dive. He urged the government to strengthen its tariff strategy.

The offer attached to that message is the part that matters for employers. Goncalves said he would bring back hundreds of laid-off workers in exchange for a stronger galvanized steel market. In other words, the recall is conditional on policy, not on the company's own schedule.

The report does not say here exactly how many workers are affected, which sites are involved, or when any recall could happen. It also does not say whether Canadian officials have responded. Those details are not yet announced, so treat the recall as a possibility and not a plan.

Why it matters if you are hiring

A conditional recall puts a pool of experienced steel and metals people on the market, with a chance some of them are called back. That affects every manufacturer near Stelco's operations and any plant that uses similar skills.

The roles most likely to be in play are the ones that run and maintain steel lines: operators, millwrights, industrial electricians, maintenance technicians, quality staff and shift supervisors. Skilled trades with coating, rolling or finishing experience carry over well to other metal fabrication, auto parts and industrial plants.

There are two decisions here. If you are short of skilled trades, this is a window to hire people who already know a heavy, safety-critical environment. Expect them to weigh your offer against a possible return, so speed and clarity on pay, shift pattern and permanence will decide who accepts. If you depend on galvanized steel as an input, a tariff-driven shift in supply and price is worth planning for now, including what it would mean for your headcount.

If you are an employer who loses people to a recall, plan for that too. Candidates who take a role with you while holding out hope for a callback may leave quickly.

One thing to do this week

List the three or four skilled roles you cannot afford to leave open, then write down what you would pay and offer to land an experienced steel worker within two weeks. Share it with whoever approves offers, so a strong candidate does not wait on a decision while a recall decision gets made elsewhere.

Traverse places food and industrial manufacturing talent, from skilled trades and maintenance to plant supervision, and helps Ontario and North American employers reach experienced people before the market tightens.
