What happened
IKO Commercial, a division of IKO Industries, has appointed three independent sales agencies to widen its regional coverage in the United States, as reported by Canadian Manufacturing. The appointments are effective immediately.
Tegco Group will cover Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Southern Delaware. The Stark Zone will cover Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia. Eco-Spec will cover Georgia. Between them, contractors and distributors in those markets get wider access to IKO Commercial's roofing products.
The company says the agencies bring commercial roofing experience and established relationships with contractors, distributors and, in Georgia, architects and consultants. IKO Industries is a Canadian company working in roofing, waterproofing and insulation. The report does not say how many people the agencies employ or whether IKO is adding its own sales staff.
Why it matters if you are hiring
This is a choice many manufacturers face: build a direct sales team region by region, or sign independent agencies that already hold the local relationships. Agencies are faster and carry less fixed cost. They also give you less control over how your product is presented.
If you make building products, equipment or components and sell into new territories, the hiring question changes. You may not need a field rep in every state. You will need people at head office who can manage agencies: a channel or sales manager, a technical sales specialist who can train agency staff on specifications, and an operations or customer service lead who can keep orders, lead times and samples moving.
In Canada, the same applies to firms looking south. Cross-border selling adds pricing, freight, compliance and warranty questions. Someone on your team has to own them. Agencies sell the product, but your people make the promises behind it.
Technical knowledge is the point in this story. Both agencies quoted stress helping customers specify and install with confidence. That is a hiring profile: people who understand the product well enough to teach it.
One thing to do this week
Write down who in your company would manage an agency or distributor partner tomorrow. If the answer is "the owner" or "nobody", draft the role: territory targets, technical training duties and the order-to-delivery support it needs.
Traverse places sales, operations and manufacturing professionals, including channel managers and technical sales people, with employers across Canada and the US.
