What happened

MDA Space Ltd., the Toronto-based space technology company, posted a $27.9 million profit for its second quarter, as reported by Canadian Manufacturing. Revenue climbed almost 34 per cent from a year earlier, to $498.6 million from $373.3 million in the second quarter of 2025. The report does not specify the currency, but MDA is a Canadian company reporting in Canada.

Net income was $27.9 million against $27.2 million a year prior. Profit for the period ended June 30 came to 20 cents per diluted share, down from 21 cents. On an adjusted basis, earnings were 36 cents per diluted share, unchanged from the same quarter last year.

MDA says the revenue increase came from higher volumes of work across all of its businesses. The report does not say how many people the company has hired, or plans to hire, to handle that work.

Why it matters if you are hiring

Revenue up by roughly a third, with profit per share flat, tells you volume is rising fast. Growth like that has to be delivered by people: production planners, assembly and test technicians, quality staff, supply chain coordinators and the supervisors who hold the schedule together. The article does not say MDA is hiring for these roles, but any employer working in or near aerospace should assume it is competing for the same skilled pool.

If you manufacture in Ontario, expect that pool to tighten. Experienced people who can work to tight tolerances, follow documented processes and handle traceability are in demand wherever volume is climbing. Contract and temporary-to-permanent hiring becomes a practical way to add capacity while order books are still being proven.

For operations leaders outside aerospace, the same signal applies. A large Canadian manufacturer scaling output affects wage expectations and how long good candidates stay on the market.

One thing to do this week

List your three hardest-to-fill production or operations roles, and check each against what a candidate with aerospace or advanced manufacturing experience could earn elsewhere. If your offer, schedule or start date would lose them, fix that before you post the role.

Traverse places manufacturing and operations people with Canadian and US employers, from plant-floor technicians to the planners and supervisors who keep output on schedule.
