What happened

Lululemon Athletica has cut 100 jobs in its customer care division, as reported by Talent Canada. The Vancouver-based retailer says the roles were part-time and tied to its Guest Education Centre, which serves North America.

Past job listings describe the centre as a hub where staff handle more than 10,000 customer calls, emails and live chats a day. Workers linked to it are either remote or based at the company's Vancouver offices.

Lululemon says the centre is moving to a model built on full-time employees instead of part-time staff. It described the change as a way to better support customers and optimize the business. The report notes the move comes while the company searches for a replacement for departing CEO Calvin McDonald and faces pressure from founder Chip Wilson over its board. The report does not say how many full-time roles will be created.

Why it matters if you are hiring

This is a restructuring of how service work is staffed, not a pullback from it. A large Canadian employer is betting that full-time people handle high-volume customer contact better than a part-time pool.

If you run a contact centre, a customer care team or a client support function, expect some of the 100 affected workers to enter the market. These are people with experience in multichannel support: phone, email and live chat at volume. Many have worked remotely.

They will also be weighing offers differently. Some will want full-time hours and stability. Employers who can offer both will have an edge over those who keep relying on part-time schedules.

It is also a prompt to look at your own mix. Part-time coverage is flexible, but turnover, retraining and uneven service quality carry real costs. Fewer, more experienced full-time people can make the case on cost per resolved contact, not just hourly rate.

One thing to do this week

Pull your last 12 months of turnover and training cost for part-time service roles and compare them with your full-time equivalents. If the gap is large, draft a business case for converting two or three part-time positions to full-time before you open your next requisition.

Traverse helps employers find experienced operations and customer service people, from team leads to full-time support specialists, and move quickly when a strong candidate becomes available.
