What happened
Unaddressed hormonal and metabolic health conditions are becoming a real driver of absenteeism, disability claims and lost productivity in Canadian companies, as reported by Talent Canada.
The figures cited are large. Menopause-related health challenges account for an estimated $237 million a year in lost productivity for Canadian businesses. And 27 per cent of Canadian men are affected by metabolic syndrome, a major contributor to cardiovascular disease and mortality. These conditions can disrupt energy, focus, mood and sleep, yet they often go unrecognized in traditional corporate wellness programs.
Access to care adds to the problem. Canadian workers face an average wait of more than six months for specialized care. Group benefit plans are starting to move past standard drug coverage and paramedical services toward clinical support for women's and men's hormonal and metabolic health. Louis-Philippe Pouliot of iA Financial Group said targeted care helps organizations manage long-term benefit plan costs while supporting well-being and performance.
Why it matters if you are hiring
A benefits package is now part of how you compete for people, and this is where it is shifting. Experienced workers are the ones most likely to be dealing with these conditions, and they are also the hardest to replace: supervisors, skilled trades, controllers, senior sales reps. Losing one to prolonged absence or disability costs far more than the premium on better coverage.
If you hire for roles with long ramp-up times, absence hits twice. The work slips, and the temporary cover has to be found, trained and paid. Plants and shift-based operations feel it most, because a missing person cannot be covered by working from home.
Candidates notice too. Support for health issues that rarely get discussed signals that an employer pays attention, and that can tip a decision between two similar offers. The report does not say how many employers are adding this coverage so far, so treat it as an early shift, not a standard.
One thing to do this week
Ask your benefits provider or broker two questions: does our plan cover clinical support for menopause and metabolic health, and what does our absence and disability data show for roles that are hard to fill? Put the answers next to your current open requisitions.
