What happened
On Aug. 27, FedDev Ontario announced a combined repayable investment of over $6.6 million in five Etobicoke-based businesses, as reported by Canadian Manufacturing. The companies are All Wood Fine Interiors, Clear Air Carbon Fiber, Just Vertical, Rawcology and SWTCH Energy. James Maloney, the MP for Etobicoke-Lakeshore, made the announcement on behalf of Evan Solomon, the minister responsible for the agency.
SWTCH Energy receives $4 million of the total. The money is meant to improve its resilience and competitiveness by building up the service capabilities it needs to deploy its EV charging solutions, software platforms and operating models in new markets. The article does not break out the amounts for the other four companies.
The funding comes through the Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI). The article says it is meant to strengthen domestic manufacturing, create growth opportunities, reduce the effect of trade disruptions and reinforce regional supply chains. Earlier in the week, Ottawa announced a $7.5 billion package of supports for workers and businesses, including another $1.5 billion for RTRI, delivered through Canada's seven Regional Development Agencies.
Why it matters if you are hiring
Repayable investment is meant to be spent on growth: new equipment, new markets, stronger service and production capacity. Companies that receive it usually need people to carry that out, and they need them soon. The report does not say what hiring the five companies plan, so treat that as unknown.
The larger signal is the extra $1.5 billion in RTRI. More manufacturers in Ontario and across Canada may qualify for support tied to expansion and supply chain resilience. That points to demand for plant and production supervisors, maintenance and technical staff, supply chain and procurement coordinators, and operations managers who can turn a funded plan into output.
It also means competition for those people. If a nearby manufacturer is funded and hiring, your experienced operators and supervisors are likelier to get calls. Retention matters as much as recruiting this fall.
One thing to do this week
Check whether your company fits the RTRI criteria through your regional development agency, and list the 2 or 3 roles you would need to fill if an expansion were approved. Knowing the roles before the money arrives shortens the time between approval and a working crew.
Traverse places manufacturing and operations people for Ontario employers, from production and maintenance staff to the supervisors and planners who keep growth projects on schedule.
