EV charger funding will pull electrical and project talent into demand

What happened

On Jul. 30, Julie Dabrusin, Minister of the Environment, Climate Change and Nature, announced $10.9 million for 22 electric vehicle infrastructure and education projects across Canada, as reported by Canadian Manufacturing.

Almost $9 million of that goes to 9 projects under the Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program. Together they will install nearly 400 chargers across the country. Around $2 million supports 13 education and awareness projects meant to make people more familiar with EVs and charging.

Two industry groups described their projects. The Canadian Charging Infrastructure Council is behind a guide for condo boards, property managers and landlords who field charging requests from residents. Electric Mobility Canada will set up fleet charging resource hubs in the Prairies and the Maritimes, and work on vehicle-grid integration, including managed and bidirectional charging. The report does not say where each charger will be installed or when the work starts.

Why it matters if you are hiring

The dollar figure is modest, but the work it describes is hands-on. Nearly 400 chargers means site assessments, electrical design, permitting, installation, commissioning and ongoing maintenance. That points to demand for licensed electricians, electrical estimators, project coordinators and field service technicians, often in the same regional pools that industrial and food plants already draw from.

On the operations side, the fleet hubs signal that municipalities, utilities and commercial fleets are being pushed to plan charging properly. Fleet managers, facilities managers and operations leads who can scope power capacity, costs and vendor contracts will be harder to find. Property managers will also need people who can handle resident requests and building upgrades.

Manufacturers should watch this too. If you run a plant with a vehicle fleet, or supply parts into EV or grid equipment, charging projects compete with you for the same trades and technicians. Expect wage pressure on electrical and controls roles in regions where several projects land.

One thing to do this week

List every role on your team that touches electrical work or fleet planning, mark which ones you could not backfill within 60 days, and start a pipeline conversation for those now rather than after a project is announced near you.

Traverse has placed operations and manufacturing people since 1997, from plant and facilities managers to the technical and coordination roles that keep infrastructure projects moving.
