What happened

Ballard Power Systems announced on Aug. 28 that it has closed its acquisition of GeoPura Limited, a UK-based provider of zero-emission, hydrogen-based power solutions, as reported by Canadian Manufacturing.

The aim is to turn Ballard into an integrated hydrogen energy solutions provider. GeoPura brings its HPU platform, fuel production and logistics. Ballard brings its fuel cell technology. Together, the companies say, they can offer a turnkey Energy-as-a-Service product, and Ballard strengthens its position in Europe.

The reported upfront consideration is £275.0 million, which includes £82.5 million in cash. Andrew Cunningham has become President of Ballard, reporting to CEO Marty Neese. He and Lord Richard Harrington, GeoPura's chairman, have joined Ballard's Board as nominees of the former GeoPura shareholders. The report does not say how many jobs or sites are affected.

Why it matters if you are hiring

The deal shows a shift in clean energy manufacturing: from building components to running the whole chain, from fuel production to delivery to on-site power. That changes the people a company needs.

If you make, supply or service hydrogen and fuel cell equipment in Canada, expect more competition for a narrow pool. The roles in play include:

  • Manufacturing and process engineers who can take a stack or power unit from prototype to repeatable production.
  • Quality and safety professionals with experience in pressurized gas and hazardous environments.
  • Field service technicians who can commission and maintain equipment at customer sites.
  • Operations and logistics managers who can run fuel supply and delivery on a schedule.

An Energy-as-a-Service model also means the manufacturer is on the hook for uptime. That puts more weight on service, supply chain and operations hires, not only engineering. Whether Ballard will hire in Canada because of this deal is not yet announced. Even so, a large buyer building out this model tends to pull skilled people from the wider market, and smaller employers feel it first.

One thing to do this week

List the three roles you could least afford to lose or leave open over the next 12 months, such as a controls engineer, a safety lead or a senior field technician. For each one, write down the realistic time to fill and the pay range you would need to compete. If the answer to either is unclear, start sourcing now rather than when a seat opens.

Traverse places manufacturing and operations people, from plant engineers and quality leads to supply chain managers, for employers across Canada and the US, with food manufacturing first and industrial work close behind.
