Automated distribution centres change who you need to hire

What happened

Apparel brand Cutter & Buck is adding a second automated distribution centre, as reported by Supply Chain Dive. The new site is in Grand Prairie, Texas.

The building holds more than 50,000 storage bins. It is equipped to process more than 1,200 bins per hour. The brand is presenting the site as a way to boost its fulfillment capacity.

The report does not say how many people the site will employ, what the investment cost, or when it will be fully running. Those details have not yet been announced.

Why it matters if you are hiring

Bin-based automation moves product to the worker, or to a machine, instead of sending people walking the aisles. That changes the staffing mix in a distribution centre, even when headcount does not fall.

Expect more demand for roles that keep the system running: maintenance technicians, controls and systems support, inventory control analysts, and shift supervisors who can read throughput data and act on it. Picking and packing roles stay, but the work is more station-based and more tied to system rates.

For Canadian employers, this matters even though the site is in Texas. Retailers and brands that ship into Canada are watching the same technology, and the same hiring pressure is arriving here. Technicians who can support automated storage are in short supply, and operations managers with real automation experience are scarcer still.

If you run a warehouse or distribution operation, the question is not only whether to automate. It is whether you can staff the building once you do. A system rated for 1,200 bins an hour only delivers that rate when the people around it are trained and the downtime is short.

One thing to do this week

List every role in your distribution operation that would be needed to keep an automated system running on nights and weekends. Mark which ones you can fill from your current team and which you would have to hire. Start sourcing for the gaps now, since technical roles take longer to fill than general warehouse roles.

Traverse places operations leaders, supervisors, inventory and logistics specialists, and technically minded warehouse staff for employers across Canada and the US, so your site is staffed for the system you are building and not the one you replaced.
