What happened
Warsh has said the spread of artificial intelligence will be uneven and will bring a sharp drop in demand at some point, as reported by CFO Dive. The remarks came alongside comments from the head of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva.
Georgieva pointed to a market risk. If the companies building AI report weaker profits than investors expect, confidence in their future earnings could slip. That, in her view, would push share prices down.
The report as we have it does not say when either shift might arrive, how large it could be, or which sectors would feel it first. It also does not set out what policy response, if any, is planned.
Why it matters if you are hiring
For finance leaders, this is a planning problem more than a headline. Two risks sit side by side: a slowdown in customer demand, and a swing in equity markets that affects valuations, financing costs and pension or investment positions. Neither can be dated, so the work is building the ability to respond fast.
That shapes which finance roles are worth adding. FP&A analysts and managers who can build scenario models and rework a forecast in days are in higher demand when conditions are uncertain. Treasury and cash management people matter more when financing may tighten. Controllers who can close quickly and flag margin pressure early give owners and boards the numbers they need sooner.
In Canada, mid-sized employers often carry a small finance team with little spare capacity. If one person leaves or the workload spikes during a volatile quarter, forecasting is the first thing to suffer. A contract hire can cover that gap without a permanent commitment you may not want to make in an uncertain year.
Also expect AI to change the work itself. Teams will want finance people who can check automated outputs and explain them, not just produce reports by hand.
One thing to do this week
Run one downside scenario on your current forecast: assume customer demand falls sharply for two quarters, then note which costs you could cut, which credit lines you would rely on, and which analyst would own the update. If the answer to the last question is nobody, you have found your hiring gap.
Traverse places finance professionals, from FP&A analysts to controllers and treasury specialists, on contract and permanent assignments for employers across Canada and the US, so your team has the right people before conditions turn.
